Breakthrough Miami and the Growlight Program Breakthrough Miami opens doors to exceptional learning experiences for motivated youth from across Miami, creating a pipeline of a new generation of diverse leaders for South Florida’s future. Nearly 1,300 middle and high-school students benefit from Breakthrough Miami’s school-year and summer programs.

Growlight is a deep-dive summer immersion experience, opening doors to the world of art, design and urban planning. A unique partnership with FIU College of Architecture and the Arts, Growlight offers high school students an opportunity to delve into real-time design projects in a four-week “think-tank” environment. Growlight serves up to 30 students from across Miami. The large majority of the cohort will be comprised of Breakthrough Miami Scholars. Students gain an introduction to urban design and access to one of the nation’s largest art/design-oriented 3D printing centers at FIU’s Miami Beach Urban Studios. Students are coached and mentored by FIU faculty and graduate students. The program also orients students to Miami Beach as a vibrant learning laboratory for urban challenges, engaging them in hands-on urban design challenges. The program also includes learning and discussion sessions with urban planning thought leaders. Program Dates: June 17, 2024 – July 12, 2024

REPORTS TO Chief Strategy OfficerPOSITION SUMMARY

The Alumni Network Enhancement Coordinator will work with the Chief Strategy Officer to improve the Breakthrough Miami Alumni Network’s ability to support college persistence and completion, as well as successful career transitions for Breakthrough Miami Alumni. The Coordinator will assist with the upgrade of the Alumni Network database, development of tools for comprehensive data collection, and improvement of communication and outreach strategies to engage alumni effectively.

This VISTA position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of an alumni network dedicated to supporting the educational and career success of young individuals. As a VISTA Member, the Coordinator will gain valuable experience in data management, analysis, and community engagement while making a meaningful impact on the lives of Breakthrough Miami Alumni.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSEnhance Data Collection Methods and Tools

  • In collaboration with the Chief Strategy Officer, develop standardized templates and protocols for collecting updated contact information and comprehensive Breakthrough Miami history from alumni.
  • Assist in the implementation of training sessions, and the creation of training materials, to educate staff and volunteers on the new data collection methods and tools.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of the data collection process, and make necessary adjustments, based on feedback and effectiveness.

Improve Data Analysis and Utilization

  • Work with the Chief Strategy Officer and Salesforce Team to upgrade the Salesforce database to ensure it can effectively store and analyze collected alumni data.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Strategy Officer, implement regular data audits to maintain data integrity and identify areas for improvement.
  • Utilize data analysis techniques to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for enhancing alumni support programs and services, and provide reports and recommendations to the Chief Strategy Officer.

Strengthen Communication and Outreach Efforts

  • In collaboration with the Chief Strategy Officer, develop a comprehensive communications plan outlining strategies for reaching and engaging alumni through various channels, such as email, social media, and alumni events.
  • Create targeted outreach campaigns to re-engage alumni who may have become disconnected from the network.

SUMMARY: The Site Director manages the staff and day-to-day operations of the school-year and summer programs at one of Breakthrough Miami’s six host school sites. This position is responsible for ensuring all program operations are aligned with Breakthrough Miami’s vision, mission and goals; and for continuously improving educational enrichment and operational processes.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the school-year and summer programs for Scholars, Teaching Fellows, AmeriCorps Members, Instructional Coaches and Volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the program team to create a curriculum for the school-year and summer programs that addresses the organization’s college preparatory mission and fosters integration of site activities in support of common goals.
  • Ensure Scholar success through effective academic programming, experiential learning opportunities and school options counseling.
  • Recruit, interview, hire and train Teaching Fellows, Instructional Coaches, Volunteers, and Interns; working with team members to ensure timeliness and quality standards are met throughout the recruitment process.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff, including Assistant Site Directors, Site Coordinators, Instructional Coaches, Teaching Fellows and AmeriCorps Members; holding them accountable for results.
  • Build and maintain relationships with the host school community, including the Parent Network.
  • Promote program engagement through the cultivation of other agencies and programs to expand the Breakthrough Miami network.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff to achieve Breakthrough Miami’s mission and goals.

SUMMARY: The Assistant Site Director (ASD) is responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of programs and services that most directly affect Breakthrough Miami Scholars and families. An ASD oversees campus or site logistics, unpaid student volunteers, some stipended positions, such as Teaching Fellows. As an ambassador of the program, the ASD builds supportive relationships with students, parents, schools, the community and other stakeholders to ensure the academic and socio-enrichment success of all Breakthrough Scholars.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively with Program Leadership to develop engaging and challenging curriculum models, and effectively implement these models during the school-year and summer program.
  • Provide current Breakthrough students with ongoing educational counseling and proactive academic outreach and intervention to ensure site achievement of all Breakthrough Miami objectives.
  • Manage programs and procedures for recruitment, admissions, scheduling and other activities for students and Teaching Fellows.
  • Supervise Teaching Fellows and other stipended positions. Participate in recruitment/selection; give ongoing feedback and coaching; participate in performance review process.
  • Manage unpaid student volunteers during the school year when there is no Site Coordinator.
  • Address incidents involving staff, students and volunteers according to established BTM practices; use judgment to escalate incidents to director level as needed.
  • Track student progress through grades, test scores, attendance, and other relevant data while maintaining up-to-date student data.
  • Manage family and student communication to foster maximum attendance and engagement.
  • Create and sustain partnerships with local elementary, middle and high schools for the purpose of student recruitment and student placement.
  • Manage site activities when Site Director is not available. Participate in and/or lead special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned.

Academic Success Coach

START DATE: Service Description 2023 – 2024

SUMMARY: Academic Success Coaches provide essential support to students on their 8-year path as Breakthrough Scholars. Working directly with Scholars, Academic Success Coaches provide mentoring, academic support, and coaching. Additionally, Coaches support program planning and implementation, and other activities to contribute to the success of Breakthrough Scholars. Academic Success Coaches receive extensive training in a variety of areas to prepare for a rewarding and successful placement with Breakthrough.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: All of the following duties and responsibilities are essential position functions, though some members may have a greater responsibility for some of the functions listed. The list is not all-inclusive and individuals may be asked to perform other position-related duties as requested by their Breakthrough Miami supervisors.

  • Act as a role model to Breakthrough Miami Scholars
  • Track student progress through grades, test scores, attendance, and other relevant data while maintaining up-to-date student data to inform student support intervention and advising
  • Provide direct academic support services to Scholars under the direction of Breakthrough staff at designated Breakthrough Miami sites to ensure Scholars are enrolling and succeeding in appropriately rigorous coursework; and accessing competitive, high-performing middle/high schools and colleges aligned with their interests and aspirations. This will include Conducting 1:1 academic and career advising, and delivering group advising sessions and academic support
  • Plan and lead advisory class in Breakthrough Miami School Year Saturdays
  • Lead academic and career development workshops
  • Mentor Scholars on the skills and strategies needed for success in school, including organization, time management, homework completion, and study habits
  • Work closely with the assigned Breakthrough Miami site director on the assigned Scholar roster.
  • Aid in the planning and implementation of Breakthrough’s School Year Program (SYP)
  • Participate actively in all training, professional development, civic reflection, and service activities
  • Reporting requirements include weekly timesheets and monthly data reporting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • You must be 17 years old by September 9, 2023 and have earned or on track to receive a high school diploma/GED.
  • You must have a commitment to community service and the ability to serve for the complete program (September 9, 2023 –May 10, 2024).
  • The Member agrees to submit to a National Criminal History Check inclusive of a finger-printing-based FBI check (completed by NWFSC HR department), FDLE check, state of residency check if other than Florida, and a Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Website Check and be clear of any charges in order to serve in the AmeriCorps program. Enrollment and eligibility of members are subject to successful clearance of the above-noted screens. Member will be disqualified from service if the results are analyzed and found to be unacceptable to the service site or to the program. (Disqualifying offenses as well as individuals who have a conviction of murder or are registered sex offenders are NOT eligible to serve with AmeriCorps).

Evaluation

Members receive a mid-service and final evaluation. Performance evaluations are intended to be a mutual exchange of information that informs the program’s service delivery and helps the member successfully complete the term of service.

Member Hours, Benefits, and Compensation:

Reduced-Half-Time members are required to accumulate 675 hours within the service period of September 9, 2023 to May 10, 2024. Members are responsible for tracking and receiving approval of their hours. Members receive the following:

  • Living Stipend: $486 semi-monthly while actively serving.
  • Education Award- upon completion of 675 service hours, all members are eligible to receive an Education Award from the Corporation for National and Community Service: $2474.27

General Job Description The Summer Site Coordinator is a critical member of the summer Administrative Team and helps ensure the smooth and safe operations of the Summer Institute at their assigned site.

Job Responsibilities

  • Train, coordinate and oversee volunteers
    • Organize schedules
    • Create rosters
    • Track community service hours
  • Supervise Summer Food Service Program and coordinate student and staff meals and snacks
    • Attend Food Service Training
    • Plan and procure snacks for program
    • Work with lunch sponsor/vendor to ensure timely prep and service delivery, and also ensure procedures and reporting requirements are fulfilled
    • Arrange for non-sponsor food needs, including special staff lunches and dinners
  • Oversee the general cleanliness of the campus
  • Coordinate and oversee general office administration, including answering phones and taking messages; making copies; checking mail; coordinating program communications; filing; and data entry
  • Work closely with BTM Business Manager to ensure all supplies needed are provided to the site faculty in a timely manner
  • Keep accurate inventory of program/office supplies
    • Dispense and track all office supplies, classroom supplies, art supplies and audio visual equipment
    • Assist with special teacher needs (video, music, etc.)
  • Oversee and manage early drop off and late pick up
  • Organize and document donated items
  • Help execute special events as needed

Instructional Coach – Academic

General Job Description Our model aspires to make learning fun and engaging, and to grow the potential of our Teaching Fellows, staff, and students in a supportive environment. Instructional Coaches (ICs) are experienced and successful professional educators who provide content specific support for BTM Teaching Fellows throughout the summer, and engage fully in the BTM community. ICs dictate the level of academic rigor during BTM’s summer program through their interactions with Teaching Fellows. Exemplary ICs effectively communicate content specifics to Teaching Fellows, guide Fellows through effective planning and execution, and hold both Fellows and students to the highest standards. Each IC will have a group of Teaching Fellows in his/her department(s) and is expected to lead department meetings, visit Fellows’ classes at least twice a week, evaluate lesson plans and curriculum overviews, and meet individually with Fellows regarding their on-going work; all the while giving constant feedback and support. Since ICs are the only professional teachers on-site, they are accountable for the quality of instruction BTM students receive, and are responsible for supporting BTM Teaching Fellows through their teaching experiences.

Specific Instructional Coach Duties

Pre-summer:

  • Complete training session (May, TBD)
  • Consult with BTM staff regarding 5th – 9th grade academic content in your specific content area in April and May
  • Meet with program staff to plan orientation workshops

Teaching Fellow Orientation:

  • Help facilitate workshops on topics, such as classroom management, lesson planning, creating classroom culture, etc.
  • Participate fully in all orientation workshops
  • Work with Teaching Fellows to design six-week unit plans and lesson plans

Six-Week Summer Program:

  • Guide Teaching Fellows through developing lesson plans, creating assessments and locating appropriate teaching resources
  • Provide Teaching Fellows with support and regular feedback as they design lesson plans
  • Observe each Teaching Fellow in your department at least once weekly, followed by a debriefing session in which Fellows receive concrete feedback based on Breakthrough’s Teaching Fellow Excellence Rubric
  • Communicate regularly with Site Director to discuss Teaching Fellow progress
  • Plan and lead departmental meetings
  • Lead at least one large group, mid-summer professional development session
  • Engage fully in the BTM community; sharing your passion for teaching, learning, and leading
  • Supporting individual student success with goal setting and documentation
  • Supervise and guide the Teaching Assistants who work with the Teaching Fellows

Evaluation Week:

  • Submit a final evaluation, as well as growth letters for each Teaching Fellow
  • Evaluate the overall summer program
  • Supervise Teaching Fellows as they compile their summer portfolios and evaluate the final products
  • Read and edit student evaluations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • State of Florida Teaching Certificate or equivalent
  • Outstanding track record as a professional classroom teacher
  • Superior presentation, writing and organizational skills
  • High degree of flexibility; ability to multitask between projects
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to hold others to high standards, while also offering support and maintaining positive relationships
  • Ability to deliver positive, constructive, and honest feedback; both written and verbal
  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation
  • Outstanding knowledge of subject matter and broad knowledge of available resources
  • Comfort and confidence in working with children and adults
  • Creativity, energy, and commitment to excellence
  • Commitment to, and passion for, teaching students from diverse backgrounds
  • Prior experience with Summerbridge or Breakthrough is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Broward County Public Schools, or Palm Beach County Public Schools or is highly desirable

The Entrepreneurship IC will adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students, provide training to Fellows, and follow up with them throughout the summer to ensure fidelity to programming. The IC will also support the execution of at least one business plan challenge.

The IC managing SEW programming, in alignment and advancing academic progress through our Scholar Success Plans, will work with all Teaching Fellows at the site and is expected to lead meetings, visit Fellows’ classes at least twice a week, evaluate advisory plans and Scholar individual Scholar check-ins, and meet individually with Fellows regarding their on-going work; all the while giving constant feedback and support. Since ICs are the professionals on-site, they are accountable for the quality of instruction BTM students receive, and are responsible for supporting BTM Teaching Fellows through their teaching and advising experiences.

  • Guide Teaching Fellows through developing lesson plans, creating assessments and locating appropriate teaching resources
  • Provide Teaching Fellows with support and regular feedback as they design lesson plans
  • Observe each Teaching Fellow in your department twice weekly, followed by a debriefing session in which Fellows receive concrete feedback based on Breakthrough’s Teaching Fellow Excellence Rubric

Breakthrough Teaching Assistants are young, energetic and enthusiastic high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who aspire to become Breakthrough Teaching Fellows. Breakthrough Miami is based on a “students teaching students” model. Each Teaching Assistant provides Teaching Fellows with avid support throughout the summer program. Teaching Assistants will be able to contribute to lesson planning activities and will be responsible for teaching 2 mini-lessons and actively participating in the learning process in the classroom.
